Two-vehicle crash with dump truck closes WY-22 at Indian Springs; one taken to St. John's, diesel spill on road

Crash closes Highway 22 at Indian Springs Drive (17:53–~19:50).

Top stories

  • Crash closes Highway 22 at Indian Springs Drive (17:53–~19:50). Dispatch sent deputies to a two-vehicle collision at WY-22 and Indian Springs with multiple callers reporting the road blocked; a fire crew already passing the scene (near Skyline Ranch / the science-school entrance) initially reported possible entrapment and requested two ambulances. That was corrected on air within minutes — all patients were out of the vehicles, no extrication needed. A large page went out at 17:58 (Battalion 3, Engines 61/11, Medics 10/60, Rescue 2-4, Support 69 on TG 1807). Highway 22 was closed both directions around 18:00; one minor ("green") patient was transported by Medic 60 to St. John's at 18:18, the other signed a refusal. Both lanes reopened by 18:31, but a dump truck involved was leaking diesel and "precariously positioned," so Battalion 3 held the scene for hazmat and stabilization until a wrecker loaded the vehicles (~19:43–19:53). Bus drivers reported traffic backed up on Broadway past Scott Lane around 19:00. WHP assisted and interviewed a patient at the hospital.
  • Reported vehicle fire downtown stood down as heater exhaust (18:08–18:13). While the Hwy 22 scene was active, dispatch paged Engine 12 for a converted bus "smoking" on N Glenwood at Marcel Ave [suspect — likely Mercill]. An officer on scene reported at 18:12 it was a motorhome's diesel heater exhausting, not a fire; Engine 12 was stood down before arrival.
  • Street construction snarls START buses all day. A large excavation at Gros Ventre ("Gravant" in transcript) and Broadway forced town-shuttle detours from about 12:05 (TG 1820), with supervisors routing buses via Willow, Pearl, Jean and Simpson. By 16:51 Jean Street was also fully blocked by a concrete truck, prompting another detour and a closed stop. School buses (TG 1812) separately reported the Cache/Kelly crossing closed around 08:08.
  • Overnight DUI arrest after Broadway stop (00:34–02:48). A stop on West Broadway led to field sobriety tests; records showed the driver on unsupervised probation with DUI priors and chemical-testing terms. A refusal was noted at 01:10 and the driver was taken to jail, then to St. John's (apparently for a blood draw), with units clear by about 02:48. Transcript is garbled in places; details hedged accordingly.
  • Two commercial fire alarms, both false. Engine 11 responded to the 4-H building at 255 W Deloney at 06:50 — a cooking incident, alarm reset by 07:00 (the building hosted a public breakfast that morning). At 08:24 Engine 11, Medic 10 and Battalion 3 went to the Wort Hotel [transcribed "Wart"], 50 N Glenwood, for a general fire alarm; false alarm by 08:29. A residential carbon-monoxide alarm off South Fall/Ellie Springs Road [suspect] at 14:30 was also unfounded after Engine 7-1 checked the home.

Also on the air

A routine fall day otherwise: roughly 42 plate checks and 22 records checks, mostly traffic stops on US-89, WY-22 (Coal Creek/scale house) and in town, nearly all ending in warnings. Three minor crashes besides the Hwy 22 wreck: a non-injury two-car fender-bender on West Broadway (09:14, non-reportable), a non-injury collision at Ron's Towing on S US-89 (17:47), and a reported hit-and-run of a parked Jeep by a red Cadillac at the Maverik (20:21, cleared with what sounds like a citation). A vehicle-vs-deer was relayed to WHP on US-191 near mm 159 at 20:04. Animal traffic was steady: a dog bite reported at the shelter, a loose-but-friendly dog reunited with its owner at Creekside, a heeler mix dodging traffic at Broadway and N Willow finally caught at 20:04, plus a moose at the Aspens and a deer herd stuck at the R Park fence per bus drivers. Downtown overnight: an intoxicated man trespassed from the Rose, another warned for urinating in public, a woman trespassed from the public restrooms after hours, and an open door at 330 N Glenwood cleared and secured. Evening brought a belligerent man trespassed from the liquor store on Buffalo Way (20:05–20:15), a DJ-party noise complaint off S Henry's Road (canceled by the caller), parking complaints, a code-4 open-line 911, and START drivers handling lost phones, transfers and a passenger drinking a beer on the bus.

Caveats

  • Significant non-Teton traffic in today's log: TG 13751 is Fremont County EMS paging (Lander/Riverton/Fort Washakie/Dubois), TG 109/113 carry statewide WHP traffic (mostly I-80 complaints from Lyman to Rawlins), and TG 1404 appears to be Lincoln County (Afton) — none included above except where it touched Teton County.
  • Whisper mangles local names: "Gravant" = Gros Ventre, "Wart/Wartboro" = Wort Hotel, "Marcel" likely Mercill, "Raptor J" = Rafter J; unit numbers, plates and several addresses are unreliable, and [suspect] lines are hedged or omitted.
  • Near-total gap after 22:00 (3 transmissions each in the 22:00 and 23:00 hours) — late-evening activity may be missing. TG 1812 is unlabeled but is clearly school-district bus operations.
