Wilson Sewer District would require hookups within 400 feet of sewer
On Sept. 1, county commissioners will weigh a Wilson Sewer District funding resolution that would require parcels with a dwelling within 400 feet of a sewer line to connect, at the owner’s expense, generally within 180 days.
The Wilson area’s shallow groundwater and its connected creeks do not get to “vote” on whether a leach field is working. On Sept. 1, the Teton County Board of County Commissioners is set to consider a funding resolution whose conditions would push the Wilson Sewer District to tighten its rules and compel connections to public sewer where homes sit close to existing lines, a direct lever for reducing the long-term risk of nutrients and pathogens reaching groundwater and surface water. The condition in the draft resolution would require the District to amend its Regulations of Sewer Use so that any parcel in the District with a dwelling “located not more than 400 feet from an existing sewer line” must connect, and pay the full cost. The timing matters for landowners who have stayed on septic. The draft condition sets a 180-day window to connect that starts after the later of two triggers: when the District completes a line within 400 feet of a particular parcel, or when the amended regulation is finally promulgated.
