Water board to review Teton County's DEQ delegation for septic permits

The Water Quality Advisory Board is set to review the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Delegation Agreement at its Aug. 21 meeting, the paperwork that lets Teton County administer permitting and inspection for small wastewater facilities (the day to day septic system world) instead of pushing every permit back through Cheyenne. That is a nuts and bolts piece of local control, and it matters most out in the county where a lot of us are still on individual systems. This delegation setup has been in place since December 2017, when the county entered into the agreement with Wyoming DEQ. Under the delegation, the county has to keep its local rules at least as strict as the state’s requirements, and the agreement is periodically reviewed. If you rely on a septic permit for a shop, a barn bathroom, an employee unit, or a home on the rural edge, listen for whether staff recommends any changes to how permits and inspections are handled, or if this is simply a check in confirming the county is still meeting state standards.
