County board to extend Forest Service prescribed fire agreement to 2027

Teton County’s Board of County Commissioners is set Tuesday to approve a modification extending Jackson Hole Fire/EMS’ prescribed fire assistance agreement with the Bridger-Teton National Forest to Dec. 3, 2027, keeping a standing framework for county crews to support federal prescribed burns and related fuels work on the forest staff report and modification packet.

For those of us watching habitat and watershed resilience, the key question is not paperwork, it is whether the county and the Forest Service are actually building the capacity to use prescribed fire more consistently in the right places and seasons. The original agreement dates to Dec. 3, 2021, and staff’s memo frames the extension as a way to continue interagency cooperation through the next burn windows (spring and fall), when smoke management, staffing, and weather align enough to do careful work instead of emergency suppression.
