Alta may ban open campfires as Stage 1 fire rules kick in
County commissioners are set to consider Stage 1 fire restrictions for the Alta area, which would prohibit open fires outside listed exceptions, effective July 8 and in coordination with Idaho partners.
If you are planning to camp, cook, or hang out around a fire on the west side this week, pay attention: county commissioners are set to consider Stage 1 (partial) fire restrictions for unincorporated Teton County west of the Teton Range, the Alta area. The draft resolution would prohibit open fires until further notice, with exceptions like established campground fire rings, enclosed charcoal grills, and portable stoves with shut off valves. Details are in the Alta Area Stage 1 Fire Restrictions Packet.
Fire/EMS staff say fire danger is currently rated High in Teton Valley and the Caribou Targhee National Forest, with increased potential for human caused starts and limited firefighting resources. The proposed motion would make restrictions effective Wednesday, July 8, and leave them in place until the county fire warden withdraws them. The Stage 1 order also keeps the county fireworks ban in effect and sets a misdemeanor penalty for violations under state law.
