Jackson may update Title 15 to the 2026 National Electrical Code
Council is set to vote June 1 on Ordinance E (second reading) to adopt the 2026 National Electrical Code for town construction, with local amendments like requiring most main disconnects be outside; the effective date in the packet is July 1, 2026.
If you are planning a remodel this summer, this is the kind of “boring” vote that can change what your electrician is required to do, and how quickly your project gets signed off. On Monday, the Town Council is scheduled to take the second reading of Ordinance E, which updates Title 15 to adopt the 2026 National Electrical Code (NEC) and includes local amendments. The packet says the change is intended to keep installations aligned with current safety standards and to support things like efficiency and renewable energy integration. See: Town Council Regular Meeting Agenda.
The detail to watch is the town-specific edits to the NEC. One amendment shown in the packet would generally require the service disconnect (your main shutoff) to be installed outside the building in a readily accessible location, with a narrower exception for some 300-amp-or-less services where the disconnect is directly behind the meter base. Staff says there is no fiscal impact to the town, and Fire/EMS has already put in more than 16 hours reviewing the code and plans more contractor and public education ahead of a July 1, 2026 effective date. If you work in trades or are mid-permit, this is worth a quick read to see whether your standard setup still passes. Source: Town Council Regular Meeting Agenda Packet.
