Teton County warns USFS shakeup could weaken fire response here
County commissioners told USDA and Wyoming’s delegation that a proposed USFS restructure—including a headquarters move to Salt Lake City—risks losing experienced staff just as a dry year ramps up wildfire season in Teton County.
For anyone who commutes over the pass and watches smoke season creep earlier, Teton County commissioners are raising a red flag: a proposed U.S. Forest Service restructure could thin out the very crews and decision-makers that keep Bridger-Teton and Caribou-Targhee running—and show up fast when fires blow up. In a letter to USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins, Wyoming’s congressional delegation and Gov. Mark Gordon, the board said the March 31 USDA plan would “undoubtedly” erode institutional capacity and stewardship, and called that “not acceptable.” The full letter is here: Letter Regarding the USFS Restructure Situation.
The county’s stakes are big: the letter notes federal employees on the Bridger-Teton manage about 1,095,900 acres in Teton County—40.6% of the county’s land area—with Caribou-Targhee managing about 11% more. Commissioners argue that shifting the Forest Service from a regional structure to a state-based model, plus moving headquarters functions to Salt Lake County, is being pitched as “closer to the land” but is more likely to drive attrition and hollow out expertise.
They also tie the timing to public safety. With the West heading into spring/summer/fall wildfire season “on the heels of an extraordinarily dry and warm winter,” the letter says experienced, fully staffed Forest Service teams are essential—and warns that relocation plans elsewhere (they cite the BLM move to Grand Junction and a GAO review) show how quickly capacity can degrade. Locally, the board also takes a practical swing at geography: if a Wyoming state office is part of the new structure, they ask that Lander be considered over Cheyenne, arguing it would be more accessible to forests and communities across the state.
