Library materials spending tops budget by Feb. 28, report shows

A February 2026 Teton County Library expenditures report shows the ‘Library Books’ and ‘Library Media’ lines already above their annual budgets as of Feb. 28, raising questions about timing and how staff plan to reconcile the accounts.

Teton County Library’s February 2026 expenditures-and-appropriations report shows two collection lines already over their full-year budgets as of Feb. 28: Library Books at $76,696.57 spent on a $73,850 budget (103.85%) and Library Media at $36,936.17 on a $27,900 budget (132.39%). The report also shows those lines with negative “remaining budget” balances (‑$2,846.57 for books and ‑$9,036.17 for media). See: Teton County Library Financial Report.

The financial tables do not explain why the materials lines are over budget (for example, whether costs reflect early‑year ordering, encumbrance timing, miscoding, or a deliberate shift among materials categories). Staff referenced a “Financial Narrative” alongside the February reports in the March 19 Library Board agenda packet, but that narrative is not included in the materials saved in the packet record. The same report shows other materials-related lines still under budget, including Materials Subscriptions (37.03% used) and Materials Supplies (80.99% used), suggesting any correction could involve transfers or reclassification among materials accounts if the spending is attributed to coding or purchasing timing.
