Teton commissioners back WY 26 wildlife-crossings grant bid in USDOT letter

Minutes from the Feb. 9 voucher meeting show the Teton County Board of Commissioners approved sending a letter to USDOT supporting Wyoming Highway 26 wildlife-crossing projects, with Fremont County commissioners copied.

Teton County commissioners voted 3-0 on Feb. 9 to send a letter to the U.S. Department of Transportation supporting Wyoming’s application for funding to build wildlife crossing projects along Wyoming Highway 26. The board approved the outgoing correspondence as presented by Public Works project manager Chris Colligan, with an amendment to copy Fremont County’s commissioners.

The action is procedural but important: USDOT grant programs typically require evidence of local-government support and coordination across jurisdictions for highway safety and wildlife-mortality mitigation projects. Teton County’s letter is intended to strengthen the state’s competitiveness for federal dollars by documenting regional buy-in.

The minutes do not spell out specific crossing locations or designs on WY 26; commissioners’ discussion and the vote were limited to approval of the support letter. (The county’s packet for the meeting includes the minutes but not the full text of the letter.) See: Regular Meeting Minutes and Financials Packet.
