Jackson DRC to review revised 32-unit Virginian Lodge apartments concept

Jackson’s Design Review Committee meets March 11 to take a conceptual look at a revised 32-unit apartment plan at 750 W. Broadway on the Virginian Lodge property, ahead of a planned April final review submittal.

Jackson’s Design Review Committee is scheduled to review a revised concept for the “Virginian Lodge Apartments” at 750 W. Broadway on March 11. The applicant is seeking conceptual design feedback on a 32-unit apartment proposal made up of four two-story buildings in the southeast corner of the 7.79-acre Virginian Lodge site, which is zoned Commercial Residential–3 (CR-3). According to the staff report, each building would contain eight units: six one-bedroom units (about 340 sq. ft. each) on the ground floor and two two-bedroom units (about 850 sq. ft. each) on the second floor. The buildings are listed as just under 22 feet tall, with second-level connections via non-enclosed stairs and a walkway. Vehicular access is described as one access point from West Broadway Avenue plus four access points along Virginian Lane (including one shared with the Virginian RV Park). The project was previously before the DRC on Jan. 14 and was continued; the applicant says the revised layout and architecture respond to committee concerns about placemaking, a “motel-like” layout, and better fitting with existing on-site buildings. The revised plan rotates and repositions the two western buildings to form a U-shaped courtyard space and adds a board-and-batten wood siding palette intended to match other buildings on the property. Staff note the required Development Plan has been submitted and is under review, and the applicant intends to pursue a final DRC review at the April 8 meeting.
